At UAMS we give students access and options to maintain a healthy lifestyle while away from home. We not only help students develop academically, but also provide the necessary tools for maintaining a clean bill of health. On this page you will find information about the following services: Student Wellness, Student Health Clinic, Health Insurance, Immunizations and the Fitness Center.
The UAMS Student Wellness Program (SWP) is a free preventative service created to provide short-term, confidential assistance for students who are actively enrolled at UAMS. The purpose of this service is to provide necessary tools for students to achieve their fullest potential. The Student Wellness Program provides assistance with depression, anxiety, grief, substance abuse, relationship conflicts, academic difficulties and numerous other issues that impede maximum functioning. Seeking care though this service is confidential and record keeping is not entered into the campus-wide electronic medical record system.
The Student Health Clinic (SHC) provides UAMS students with treatment of acute illnesses, wellness, and health promotion services and continual health education. Students who pay the clinic fee at registration have access to the SHC. Upon arrival, students must present their student ID and insurance information when checking in for clinic services. Although this is a walk-in clinic, students are asked to call in advance for an appointment, whenever possible.
To keep workload and everyday commitments balanced, UAMS offers a Fitness Center membership to all students for a nominal fee. Keeping fit helps physically and mentally, by allowing an outlet to release stress one may experience over the course of a day. Stop by the 8th Floor of the College of Public Health building and check out the cutting-edge employee and student fitness facility. The facility is open around the clock, 24 hours, seven days a week, with key card access for your convenience.
While maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important, all students at UAMS are required to provide immunization information as well. As a courtesy, some immunizations are available, at a reduced rate, through Student and Employee Health Services (SEHS). Please contact SEHS in advance to make an appointment.
Students enrolled at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences are required by University of Arkansas Board policy (Policy 1260.1) to have health insurance coverage at all times. The responsibility for obtaining health insurance coverage rests with the student. Although students are not required to purchase the campus policy, there are coverage options available if needed. UAMS verifies student health insurance twice each year and is a requirement for part-time and full-time students.
